LAVENDER FILM CLUB: We Live Here: The Midwest

Lavender Film Club is our monthly meetup where we watch a film together and have an honest conversation about how we felt, what we’ve learned, or what we appreciated about cinematography centered by or about marginalized communities all around the world.

We Live Here: The Midwest (2023), a documentary that profiles five LGBTQ+ families living in Iowa, Ohio, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas. Directed by Melinda Maerker, the film challenges the concept of ‘family values’ often appropriated by conservative ideologies by showcasing the diverse and inclusive realities of these families. It features couples and parents like Nia and Katie, who were expelled from their church, and Mario and Monte, a gay Black couple raising their daughter, highlighting issues faced in regions typically underrepresented in media.
